mysqladmin version

Hi everyone:
I installed mysql in /usr/bin and can´t execute BINDIR/mysqladmin version or
BINDIR/mysqladmin variables.

As root i execute the command /usr/bin/mysqladmin version that respond the
following error message:
/usr/binmysqladmin: connect to server at ´localhost´ failed
error: Access denied for user:  ´root@localhost´ (Usin password: NO)´

What that means....... thanks in advance
