Solaris/hme problems

I am having problems getting Snort 2.0.0 working on an Ultra2 running 
Solaris 8.

hme0, the built-in NIC is configured with an IP address for normal 
system access.  Apache(ACID) is running on this interface.

hme1 has no IP (although giving it one doesn't help) and is plugged into 
a SPAN switch port.

When I fire up snort on hme1, hme0 shuts down!!!  The link light on the 
switch goes out and hme0 is then completely dead until I reboot the system.

Any/all help is greatly appreciated.
