Thanks for that MS SQL suggestion. I'm not planning to install SQL server, as I'm not familiar with it (I'm more familiar with Oracle), however, I deleted the whole snort foder and installed it again without the MS SQL option, and looks like I'm getting closer. The network interface, preprocessors and plug-ins initialized successfully, as well as rules file./snort.conf parsed. When initializing rule chains I get an error: Unable to open rules file: .snort.conf or././snort.conf Fatal Error, Quitting.. Any ideas on that? Olaf, It's looking for MSSQL files. Are you going to be installing MSSQL? If not then consider the other options. MySQL works GREAT for a database solution. -Michael -- Michael Steele | System Engineer / Support Technician mailto:michaels () silicondefense com Silicon Defense - The Cyber-War Defense Company Website: http://www.silicondefense.com Snort: Open Source Network IDS - http://www.snort.org -----Original Message----- From: snort-users-admin () lists sourceforge net [mailto:snort-users-admin () lists sourceforge net] On Behalf Of Olaf Lachowicz Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2003 3:05 PM To: Neil Dickey Cc: snort-users () lists sourceforge net Subject: Re: [Snort-users] 1.9.1 winxp home yup, I changed directories using cd c:\Snort before I ran snort. However, it looks to me like the snort executable is in c:\Snort\bin. So, now I changed it to it, and run it again. Now a new window pops up and says: "snort.exe - Unable to locate component. This application has failed to start because ntwdblib.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" This sounds odd to me, cause the ntwdblib.dll is in the same directory as snort.exe, which is the bin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Neil Dickey" <neil () geol niu edu> To: <olaflachowicz () yahoo co uk> Cc: <snort-users () lists sourceforge net> Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2003 9:38 PM Subject: Re: [Snort-users] 1.9.1 winxp home"Olaf Lachowicz" <olaflachowicz () yahoo co uk> wrote:HI, I've just installed Snort 1.9.1 on my winxp home edition box in the directory: C:\Snort. When I try "snort" from the command line, instead of the list of commands, I get: 'snort' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.Does the C:\Snort directory exist in your path? If not, the OS won't find the executable when you try to run it. Change directories into C:\Snort before you try to run it and see if that helps. It should because Windows/DOS checks the current working directory for an executable before it tries those in the path. What you may want to do is set up a shortcut to Snort, with thecorrectpath, working directory, and arguments. Then all you have to do is double-click the shortcut and you're running.
