Because Snort is a NIDS, it does not need to install in a production

You can install it in Linux or BSD as a standalone machine, and have
this machine connect to the same subnet of the production network. There
should be no IP assigned to the machine afterward.

Ummmm... Sam, I think that Stuart knows that. He simply wants to use
existing hardware, or may have a such a security policy in place that he
_can't_ use a 'non specified OS' machine.

Stuart, two things: Can/have you tried GNU Make? And could you resend to
the snort-developers list? More of the code geek type are over there. ;)

One 'odd' thought--I've looked and the parentheses are there in my
version. Some how, did the lines get 'split' into two separate ones?

Good luck!
