Have you installed a libpcap from tcpdump.org?  For the longest time,
the pcap_stats call returned zero for drops since there was no system call
to obtain them.  Sometime after July 2001 code was added to get the statistics
but the results were unpredictable until December 2001 when the length
of the data structure was initialized prior to the system call.
