Running Snort on Windows doesn't "defeat" anything. Snort is still free. Let's do the math: Acquiring Snort for UNIX: Free Acquiring Snort for Windows: Free Sure, you have to pay for a Windows license if you have a Windows box. That's a given. And sometimes, for any number of reasons, it has to be done. That's also a given. You're stating the obvious here...
