problems upgrading acid from 18 to 20

Was running acid v 0.9.6b18 and upgraded to 0.9.6b20.
now there is no outputted alerts on screen.
Tried last 15, unique, search, etc.
db connection good (tried with wrong password and failed)
copied back 0.9.6b18 and it works fine.
Setup is Freebsd 4.4, Apache 1.3.22, php 4.06, adodb V1.31, mysql 3.23.42
db schema 104.

enabled debugging and no error messages. all pages seem to display fine,
just no alerts, as if empty database.
