Snort stops mysteriously

I did a source rpm install on two RH 7.0 machines. Everything seemed to 
go without a glitch, but Snort will not run continuously. Actually ps 
reports it up, but nothing appears in the logs. After a restart or two, 
sometimes things work for a while, and then die again.
