Be sure that your snort.conf file doesn't have a space in a var line:

Correct:
var INTERNAL [10.0.0.0/8,172.16.0.0/16]

Wrong:
var INTERNAL [10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/16]

I found that a rogue space will generate a core dump immediatley.
