Subject: Aussie Filesharers to Face Litigation?
Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 14:36:03 +1000

The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) issued a presser today
supporting the RIAA's actions against individual filesharers.

I have to wonder how far this support will go, and whether the global action
coordinated through the International Federation of Phonographic Industries
(IFPI) intends to take down individuals right across the globe? IFPI has a
statement with similar sentiments at its site.

ARIA
Media Statement
June 26, 2003

The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) supports the recent
announcement by the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) that they
are preparing to issue lawsuits against internet uploaders who supply
illegally copied music files.

File sharing networks in particular present a global problem for the music
industry and a globally co-ordinated response is being undertaken by the
industry. ARIA continues to monitor the situation in Australia in
conjunction with its colleagues internationally through IFPI. If the
commencement of litigation locally is warranted, then ARIA will commence
such proceedings as are strategically appropriate at that time.

ARIA notes that the RIAA statement relates only to targeting individual
suppliers (or uploaders). These activities have a significant negative
impact on the industry, particularly at a time when the industry is
developing, or supporting the development of, legitimate online business
models, most notably, Apple iTunes. It remains important that piracy in all
its forms, including via the internet, be addressed.
