*** SIG News***

CPCUG has established a policy for cancelling events due to inclement
weather. If public schools in the jurisdiction where an event will be
held (Fairfax County, for the Internet SIG) are closed for the day, or
close early, because of weather, the event is cancelled. This is
intended to avoid people having to check any CPCUG-related information,
just check on Fairfax County schools. I hope we never need to worry
about this, but it's useful just in case.

Comfort note: The Washington Gas Light auditorium is often surprisingly
cold. If you're sensitive to chilly surroundings, dress warmly or in
layers, or bring a sweater or a companion.

To encourage prompt arrivals and a vigorous discussion period from 7 to
8 pm, raffle prizes are sometimes awarded at 7:15 pm. We reserve the
right to discontinue distributing raffle tickets at that time, so that
the only way to win prizes will be to attend the pre-presentation
discussion!

Among regular prizes offered are books from O'Reilly & Associates, Inc.
<http://www.ora.com>, Internet access from Millkern/CPCUG
<http://www.millkern.com> and <http://www.cpcug.org> and occasional
gifts from Microsoft <http://www.microsoft.com>.

Watch for last-minute email notices sent to the Internet SIG mailing
list regarding weather-related changes and cancellations! These will be
accurate and may supercede information printed in CPCUG's magazine, The
Monitor, or posted elsewhere. If you attend Internet SIG meetings,
it's worth subscribing to ensure hearing late-breaking news!

Internet SIG meetings begin with audience introductions and a general
question/answer dialogue. This is an opportunity to discuss Internet
triumphs achieved, information/resource treasures found, or mysteries to
be resolved. Internet novices are most welcome. We encourage grizzled
Internauts to help novices gain expertise by answering questions in
complete sentences consisting primarily of English words.

In order to enhance and demonstrate the value of CPCUG membership,
raffle prizes are reserved for CPCUG members. Please bring CPCUG
membership card, Monitor issue, or your membership number to facilitate
claiming prizes.

Note instructions at end of this note for self-service mailing list
including subscribing/unsubscribing, updating subscriptions, and
retrieving mailings!!!

After meetings, dedicated Internauts sometimes seek a late dinner. Join
us for a friendly meal and personal networking!

*** Future SIG Meetings ***

Topic: Broadband Internet Access (Cable/DSL) Panel
Speakers: TBA
Date: Thursday, June 8, 2000, 7 pm
Location: Washington Gas Light Corporation, Springfield, Virginia

As competing technologies for fast Internet access -- cable modem and
DSL, available from cable TV and telephone companies -- become widely
available, new technical, logistical, and economic issues and tradeoffs
emerge. This meeting will bring together vendors and customers of the
competing technologies to provide facts, rebut myths and
misinformation, and allow accurately evaluating and comparing them.

Topic: Vanity Searching -- Finding Yourself and Your Tracks Online
Speaker: John Schwartz, Washington Post
Date: Thursday, July 13, 2000, 7 pm
Location: Washington Gas Light Corporation, Springfield, Virginia

If you use the Internet, you may be leaving tracks as clear as
footprints in fresh snow. Everything you do -- Web browsing, newsgroup
postings, email list subscribing and posting -- can leave permanent
records. Retrieving this kind of information about onself is called
"vanity searching". This presentation will describe vanity search
techniques useful to learn what the Internet knows about you, and ways
that some data can be corrected or removed.

Speaker biography:

John Schwartz writes about technology issues for the Washington Post. He
has written about such topics as government regulation of the Internet,
xenotransplantation and the dinosaurian origins of birds, C. Everett
Koop and Moxy Fruvous. He was born in Galveston, Texas and got a liberal
arts degree from the University of Texas; he also graduated from the
University of Texas Law School. He lives in Takoma Park, Maryland with
his college sweetheart and three children.
