The trick is it knows how to speak http proxy languange. May proxies, like squid, demand a username and password, then a specific string to pass the connection on. corkscrew can do that. Corkscrew works with ssh, it hands the proxy your username and passwoard, starts the proxy on to the desination, then hands off to ssh.
