Zach,In addition to those tools, are you familiar with Nessus? It might be helpful in your penetration testing since it keeps an up-to-date database of exploits.

Set a private IP address to the virtual network adapter which will be found at control pannel> network connections. Set IP like 192.168.1.1 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 .. No need for a gateway. 2. Now boot the OS in VMWare, set the network adapter in the virtual machine OS with IP address in same range say, 192.168.1.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 ... You can give gateway 192.168.1.1 if you plan to access other networks on host OS (Note: to do this stuff you may need to use NAT and Routing and Remote Access running on host OS (XP), especially while accessing internet on host OS) 3. Now ping from virtual machine to host machine IP address 192.168.1.1. You must get a echo reply. Now you can use Nmap to scan vitual OS from host Os or vice-versa.
