IPS sort of systems based on Snort would be
Hogwash
http://sourceforge.net/projects/hogwash/

or

snort inline
http://snort-inline.sourceforge.net/
http://honeynet.org/tools/index.html

and any others I may have missed

If you're worried about being invisible with it, you really need to
take
a look at the NetOptics taps (http://www.netoptics.com/). We use one
and it's seamless; 100% totally invisible from the network because it's
not actually physically connected to the network. The signal is
magnetically induced onto another set of wires. It's slick.
