I don't know the specifics of when the protocol version changed, but I have
seen mysql versions as new as 3.22.30 with protocol 9 and servers as old as
3.21.25 with protocol 10.

Ted Behling (tbehling () MONARCHIS NET) was saying:

In MySQL, the software version number (e.g., 3.22.32) and the protocol
version number (e.g., 10) do not correspond 1:1. I'm running 3.21.29
locally, and it uses protocol version 10. My understanding is that
protocol versions are backward (but not forward) compatible.

are you talking about something different than the server version number, ie
3.22.32?
