is the email something like robin @ gmail.com?

it's possible that technically illiterate people are just typing their name
@ gmail.com or mistaking what their email address is.  i remember a long
time ago reading a thread and people had these really old usernames like
bob () yahoo com and they were getting all sorts of misdirected emails because
random people would type in their usernames mistakenly.  i've seen people
approaching senility who do this too.  type in their name @ domain.com

maybe in the future you could click the confirmation link to activate the
account, and then reset the password later on to see what sort of activity
has happened on the account.  you can also get an ip address if the service
displays your login history.  i dont know if that's legal, so if it's not,
then ignore what i just said.  but it might be the most direct way to get
to the bottom of your issue.
