Has anyone ever looked into scripting/automating community or commercial

There has been an effort to create automation tools around OpenVAS.
Take a look at Greenbone Security Assistant which provides a web GUI
for OpenVAS and supports scheduled scans as well as managing hosts,
groups and credentials. It will save scan reports in a number of
formats including Nessus XML, HTML and PDF.
