One of the links Adrian included in his original question had them using
an electron microscope.

For what it's worth, I found the same link a few months ago when I was
researching the same thing for campus, and passed it on to one of our CS
profs (this guy: http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~iang) and he said it looked
reasonable.

Something just does not feel right about a single over write.

Of course not.  We've been told for our entire professional careers that
it's not enough.  Folk wisdom is a powerful force.
