Hi folks! I'm not sure if this brief research will interest anyone other than me but ... As you may have heard, Google recently announced the good news that they will be running the Summer of Code program again in 2016 for their 12th year. That is great news for us (Nmap Project) and we will certainly apply again. After all, we've participated in all 11 of the previous programs, culminating in the success of all five of our students this year! That got me thinking: Of the 515+ projects which Google mentions have participated in Google Summer of Code every single year? To answer that we start with the 39 who participated in the first year: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/2005/ I made a list of those and then compared each of the following years, removing organizations which didn't participate that year. I tried to track name changes such as Gaim to Pidgin and Jabber to XMPP. Here are the results: 2005: 39 projects to start out with as listed at https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/2005/ 2006: 37 of those still standing. Semedia and OpenMeteo project drop from the list. 2007: 31 still stand. This drop of 6 was the largest of any year. Horde, JXTA, LiveJournal, Project Looking Glass, Monotone, and The Perl Foundation drop from the list. 2008: 28 still standing. Handhelds.org, OpenOffice.org, and Ubuntu drop from the list. 2009: 23 still standing. This was another big drop-out year losing Gallery, Internet2, XMPP, LispNYC, and OSCAR 2010: 18 left. Drops are Fedora, Joomla, WinLibre, Xwiki and technically Subversion since they merge with Apache (still on the list). 2011: 17 left: The only drop is Pidgin 2012: 16 left. The only drop is Codehaus 2013: 15 left. Drupal drops. 2014: 14 left. The only drop is NetBSD 2015: 10 remain after Blender, Inkscape, Mozilla, and SAMBA drop. So out of the 515+ projects which have participated in GSoC over the years, there are only 10 of us who have done it every single year. And here's the list (drum roll please!): Apache Software Foundation FreeBSD GNOME Google (Open Source Programs Office, Google Kubernetes, etc.) KDE Mono Project Nmap Security Scanner Portland State University Python Software Foundation Wine Project I'd say we're in pretty good company! -Fyodor
