Can I produce nmap-xml from scripts?

Maybe it is indeed better to write graphing scripts that work on
nmap.xml. Mainly because the graphviz data may be inconveniently large
in some cases, and there is no proper way to store it in a file from a
script.

Can I somehow add edges from a script to the zenmap graph? Some
protocols reveal connection tables, so reporting the connections would
not be too hard, if there was an API to do that.

If you add hop elements to the XML, Zenmap will show them (with an
orange line, if you connect subtrees).
