David,

nmap-3.75 works fine...
nmap-4.11 could not get to compile
nmap-4.20 fails to open interface
nmap-4.62 interface route issue
nmap-5.00 interface route issue -- might this be due to interface "instances"?

Please let me know what additional information I can provide.

You say that this has been a problem for the last few versions. Do you
know of a version that did not have this problem?
