I should make it clear that all the features of Nmap work with wireless
cards work under Windows, as long as the wireless card is being used as
an Ethernet device. Your setup is different because your wireless card
is being used as a point-to-point device; that's why it shows up with
the name ppp0 instead of eth0 or something like that. Nmap doesn't have
any problem with everyday wi-fi connections.

Using a live CD will work as long as it has drivers for your wireless
card. But you appear to have some kind of custom setup, so I can't say
for sure. What is it, a cell phone modem?

It's a Verizon wireless card setup. It does have a telephone number
associated with it, so my guess is that it is a cell phone modem.

I know that nmap works with a standard wifi because I've used it in Linux
(for basic scans only) and it seemed to work fine.

I don't know if Linux would even have drivers for this card. It's probably
worth a look, since this is my only Internet connection at the moment.
But if I can get a linux box up and running, at least I could scan myself
and practice with the tool...
