Problem with nmap, command -P*

Hello,

 

i use your tool for experimental analyses for my study. I write in the
moment diploma in Germany. Now I have a problem. I read some books and
posted my problem in the networklab forum.

 

I want to scan my computer. Exacting I want to ping Hosts in my network.

The following command do other things as you and all Documentations says:

 

Nmap –PU –v 192.168.1.0/24

 

Normally this call sends UDP-pakets on Port 80 in the net. If there are a
host who is down I get back a ICMP-call.

But it isn´t so. I use the Sniffer Wireshark.

First ARP-Broadcasts are sending in the net. The host with the right
IP-adress send a message that he has the IP. It´s ok. But then the hosts who
are up, all ports are scaned with Syn-Stealth Scan. A list of open port from
all hosts who are up are announced.

The same procedure are with the Command –PA, -PS, -PI, -PB, -PR, -PP

Why? I use nmap Version 4.20 on Windows and Linux Computers. At every
Computer is the same problem. I have root  on Linux Suse 10.2 and I am
administrator on Windows XP SP1.

Nobody know why it is so. And I don´t know if the scan is correct on other
Systems.
