Ouch!, so you want to write software that: 1) Runs on any platform (Windows, Mac, Linux, AmigaOS, etc) 2) Detects their OS version (including all 33 variations of Vista [http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/03/windows-vista-multiple-versions.html ]) 3) Detects if there is a firewall a) on their PC, b) on their connection and c) anywhere else and 4) Detects what firewall that is... Hmm... Sounds like you've just reached Nirvana.... :0 While there are probably simpler ways to find some of this info (start at Page 1: "Is there a 'Start' button at the bottom left of your screen?...), to a degree it certainly makes sense (once you have permission from the user and their ISP) to use tools like nmap to try and determine what else is going on. Just my 2c. Later'ish Craig

Wouldn't it be easier to develop software for the client to run, and it reports back what OS and firewall are running?
