That is a good point, and parallelization is definitely on the agenda.
There's probably a good technical reason why parallelization can't be done easily but none comes to mind right away.
The reason is just that the OS detection code was written long ago before the rest of Nmap was set up for this sort of multi-host parallelization. rDNS is also aching to be parallelized.
