Really? Nmap and ethereal used to work back when this box had w2k. From
the winpcap faq (15):

"WinPcap does not support on SMP machines, because we don't have
multiprocessor computers on which to develop/test it. For this reason,
recent versions have an initialization check that prevents them to load
on SMP machines."

According to this, winpcap 2.3 does not even load on an SMP system
unless you force it to boot with 1 processor. I think nmap has a custom
version of winpcap... but winpcap 2.3 definitely does not load on my
box.....

I guess this is kind of OT

I have been running nmap 2.54 beta 33 on my w2k server
(sp2) dual amd box just fine using winpcap 2.3 ...
haven't had any issues with SMP at all.

If I'm not mistaken, the reason winpcap is required
is to provide raw socket
support that nmap needs. Windows 2000 and Windows
XP has built in raw

successfully run nmap
without winpcap installed on Windows 2000 systems.
Not sure what else your
problem could be except that maybe you have some
firewall rules set up to
prohibit these applications from running properly.

What could possibly go wrong?

Has anyone had any success running nmap on SMP
WinXP or W2k system?
Winpcap does not work on SMP machines (I just
found out), so nether
ethereal nor nmap works on my primary box. Grrrrr.
 nmap uses winpcap
for windows yea?
