pcap libs

Hi
I was just looking through the nmap code for the first time a few days back, haven't really had a chance to go through
it properly yet, but one thing i did notice was the use of the pcap libs. I was just wondering what exactly is the
wisdom behind this? Whenever I have needed to use raw sockets in the past, the standard API has always provided all the
packet data i needed, and I can't see why nmap would need anything more. Maybe I'm just being thick, but it does seem
strange
