Backboor with Netcat and Meterpreter

Hello, 

I have an Ubuntu 10.04 as my target and I want to install a meterpreter backdoor. 
I was hoping to use netcat so that I can change the listening port easily, and the -e option to execute meterpreter. 

Is this possible? 
How do I configure meterpreter? 
What is the easiest way to demonstrate this?
