Testing exploits

when testing exploits
exploit/windows/fileformat/adobe_media_newplayer
exploit/windows/fileformat/adobe_flashplayer_newfunction

with windows/download_exec payload: where the shellcode loads and execute an executable? Does it load and execute exe 
directly in memory? I tried to load the exe program which just opens a window(like notepad), but it doesn't show 
anything, though it looks that exploit 'works' and 'loads' something.
