The National Election Commission (NEC)'s Web site came under a large-scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack for two hours on the morning of Oct. 26, the day of by-elections that included the Seoul mayoral race.
Nearly 40 days after the incident, police arrested a former aide to GNP legislator Choi Ku-sik and three Web site administrators Sunday on suspicions of mobilizing about 200 virus-carrying computers to swarm the NEC's server with massive traffic.
Choi denied any involvement in the hacking scheme allegedly orchestrated by his 27-year-old aide, surnamed Kong, who recently left his jobs citing health problems.
