It seems to me that China, in turn, learned from what the US got right in
the 1950s and 1960s: that the way you get something to cover a sprawling
country that has uneven economic development is for the government to do it.

It would be shocking to think any US administration (let alone a Republican
one in this century) would revert to this stance, despite its track record
of success.
