From: Ross Stapleton-Gray <ross.stapletongray () gmail com> Date: August 17, 2018 at 10:23:29 GMT+9 To: DAVID FARBER <dave () farber net> Subject: New DARPA initiative: Safe Documents (SafeDocs) ... dealing with potentially compromised docs [and yet again, preface with my "Ridiculous that DARPA gives such little advance notice..." rant] tl;dr: "DARPA is interested in research that will radically improve software's ability to safely reject invalid and maliciously crafted input data, while preserving essential functionality of legacy electronic data formats. It is anticipated that research will build on an existing base of knowledge of electronic document, message, and streaming formats and the nature of security vulnerabilities associated with these formats. SafeDocs aims to restore trust in electronic documents and messages, mitigating one of the root causes of the Internet insecurity epidemic, which is exploitation of software's input-handling weaknesses via complex, maliciously crafted data inputs..." The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Information Innovation Office (I2O) is sponsoring a Proposers Day, to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of the anticipated SafeDocs Broad Agency Announcement (BAA). If released, the BAA will be posted on the Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) website at http://www.fedbizopps.gov. This Proposers Day will be held at the unclassified level. There is no fee to attend. This meeting is not open to the general public nor members of the media. The Proposers Day will be held on August 24, 2018, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (ET) at the DARPA Conference Center, located at 675 N. Randolph Street, Arlington, Virginia, 22203. Check-in begins at 1:00 PM (ET). Advance registration is required to attend in person. Attendance at the SafeDocs Proposers Day is voluntary and is not required to propose to subsequent solicitations (if any) on this topic. The Proposers Day does not constitute a formal solicitation for proposals. This notification is issued solely for information and program planning purposes, and is not a Request for Information (RFI). Since this is not an RFI, no submissions against this notice will be accepted by DARPA. DARPA will not provide reimbursement for costs incurred to participate in this Proposers Day. Interested parties to this notice are cautioned that nothing herein obligates DARPA to issue a solicitation. Ross Ross Stapleton-Gray, Ph.D. Stapleton-Gray & Associates, Inc. Albany, CA
