Dave,

On this topic, I just got back from a trip to Sweden where I rented Volvo’s new V90, overall a pretty nice car. I
was able to play with its “Pilot Assist” option, which is a mode the car can go into once adaptive cruise control is
engaged. A little green steering wheel icon lights up when the mode is engaged and the lane can be tracked. It did
extremely well in “autonomously driving”, but required that it could sense my hand on the wheel, and after I removed
it for about 15 seconds, the icon would light up saying “Apply Steering”, then it would beep at you if still not
applied, then finally it would beep and shut off the mode as well as cruise control, essentially slowing the car.
Seemed to me this was the best way to gracefully put the driver back in control.

Tesla Driver In Fatal Florida Crash Got Numerous Warnings To Take Control Back From Autopilot

Joshua Brown, the Tesla driver killed last year while using
the semi-autonomous Autopilot mode on his Model S, received
several visual and audio warnings to take control of the
vehicle before he was killed, according to a report from the
National Transportation Safety Board. Despite the warnings,
Brown kept his hands off the wheel before colliding with a
   truck on a Florida highway.

The big problem here is that the Tesla continued motoring along
normally even though the driver wasn't complying with the autopilot
warnings to take back control. This is unacceptable, and puts innocent
parties at risk (that is, other drivers of other vehicles). If the
driver isn't complying, the Tesla cannot be permitted to simply
continue as if nothing was wrong.
