The Australian Attorney General and a key Australian minister have
published a memo detailing the demand they plan on presenting to the next Five Eyes surveillance alliance meeting, which will be held next week in Ottawa. https://boingboing.net/2017/06/26/crypto-denialism.html However, it’s a bit more interesting that all that:
Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed he uses a secret
messaging app, saying unsolicited texts sent to federal MPs prove SMS technology is not secure. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-03/malcolm-turnbull-uses-secret-messaging-app-instead-of-sms/6276712 And more recently, now that Turnbull is the PM:
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his most senior cabinet ministers are
using a third-party messaging application to conduct confidential discussions, prompting cyber security experts to warn the innovation could actually pose a security risk.
The use of WhatsApp is not limited to senior ministers; private chat
'groups' exist for government chiefs of staff, ministerial media advisers, the frontline economic team, and a defence-focused "broadcast group" used by Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne to communicate with MPs and staff. https://tinyurl.com/gwlewy7 http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/malcolm-turnbull-and-senior-cabinet-ministers-using-whatsapp-could-pose-security-risk-experts-20161012-gs0cuj.html Quite a few news stories show up if you do a search for "Malcolm Turnbull whatsapp”.

Australia said on Sunday it will push for greater powers to tackle the use of encrypted messaging services used by terrorists and criminals at an upcoming meeting of ministers from the "Five Eyes" intelligence network. The United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, will meet in the Canadian city of Ottawa next week, where they will discuss tactics to combat terrorism and border protection, two senior Australian ministers said.
