Jefferson also said something to the effect that a Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have and that the course of history shows that as government grows, liberty decreases. Wise words for today when the USG is getting their $$ (and mitts) on everything.

Hi David -- you can put this out on IP if you think it notable -- I
just thought it really interesting to point out what Jefferson says in
the last sentence here, right after the sentence that's usually cited:

"The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the
very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me
to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or
newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to
prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive
those papers and be capable of reading them."
