Pass & Fly project to make easier check-in and boarding procedures at Nice
Côte d'Azur Airport

A worldwide first at Nice Côte d’Azur Airport: no more queues, no more
queries, all that’s needed is a cellphone to glide through the check- in &
boarding!

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, Air France, Amadeus and IT provider IER have
joined forces for this partnership project geared at reducing costs while
speeding up the passenger check-in & boarding. Based on NFC (Near Field
Communication) technology which enables contactless ‘proximity
transactions”, the solution allows passengers to go through the different
steps of the process simply with their mobile phone in hand.

Passengers must have previously checked in (via Internet for example) and then all they have to do is present their phones to the Pass & Fly reader
terminals along the way. The system not only identifies the customer and
confirms registration, but automatically credits new loyalty points. And
these transactions are done even if the phone is off. The only document in this paperless-approach is a coupon delivered at the boarding gate with the
passenger’s seat number and special requests.

Beyond the immediate advantages for check-in and boarding, the solution also provides direct access to travelers on the move. On the practical side, text messages can inform them for example of flight delays, allowing for better
airport passenger management. At the same time, it is also an excellent
means to obtain valuable information on customer profile and to dispatch
promotional messages.

The 1st pilot phase just launched at the Nice-Côte d’Azur, will run till
September 09 on Air France Nice-Orly flights. The test involves the
airline’s Flying Blue customers and Club Airport Premier members who have been equipped with NFC enabled phones or stickers for their current phones. This first step, if successful, should lead to a further deployment in Nice,
before expanding to other airports.
