John Windhausen's estimate in January 2008 was $100 billion. That, and much more about why it's worth it, what the savings will be, and an interesting idea on how to fund it are available in the report he did for Educause entitled "A Blueprint for Big Broadband," which is available at:

Interestingly, John worked for Senator Inouye as a Commerce Committee staffer working on the '96 Telecom Act.

For IP, if you think it's appropriate.

Late last month, Senator Inoyue held a hearing on broadband and asked those testifying at least twice how much it would cost to deploy broadband across the entire country. No one had an answer for him.

If we expect to have nationwide broadband, if would be helpful to have an answer. Does anyone on the IP list have a good estimate for the cost of:

-- nationwide fiber broadband (reaching 98% of the population or so) and

-- nationwide ultrafast (100 mbps+) wireless?

Many thanks, Tom Bleha
