(Dave, for IP if you wish)

I read a similar article this morning in The Register (http:// www.theregister.co.uk/2007/09/25/iphone_locking/) and realized to my alarm that I may find myself trapped in a Catch 22 from Apple.

I purchased an iPhone a few weeks after they were released. I activated it with AT&T and found that the service was not acceptable. Within 24 hours I called AT&T and cancelled my contract.

For the next month or more I very happily used the iPhone as a wireless ethernet connected information appliance and found it very useful. I only started having doubts when Apple offered the $100 rebate. You see, the PIN number for the rebate is sent via text messaging. After several highly unhelpful calls and emails with Apple support, the final word from them was that I had to be able to receive an SMS or I could not claim the refund.

This past weekend I unlocked my iPhone specifically so I could use my wife's T-Mobile SIM to apply for the refund. As noted, I had happily used the iPhone without any phone service at all and would have continued to do so if not for being excluded from Apple's refund policy.

So, what are my options (hopefully other than small claims court) when I become the proud owner of an iBrick after the next patch?

Running Any Third Party iPhone Apps? Bye-Bye Warranty!

FROM GIZMODO.COM: You heard that the new firmware bricks unlocked
iphones? Get this: Apple just confirmed to me that running any third-
party app at all voids the warranty, and you won't be covered if your
iPhone bricks for whatever reason.
