A Turkish court has "banned" YouTube in Turkey due to videos that are deemed offensive to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the nation's modern founder. I quote the word "banned" since such efforts at blocking access to specific materials will be ultimately unsuccessful. While Turk Telekom can block access to the YouTube site, it of course has no way to block the myriad other locations where the videos in question can be easily made available, either publicly or privately. However, by attempting to ban the videos and drawing even more attention, they will likely result in increasing the videos' viewership greatly, even within Turkey. Yet another example of how governmental authorities do not understand the intrinsic nature and reality of the Internet. We do not necessarily have to like all aspects of this reality, but to pretend that it doesn't exist is counterproductive and in some cases essentially delusional. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein lauren () vortex com or lauren () pfir org Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 http://www.pfir.org/lauren Co-Founder, PFIR - People For Internet Responsibility - http://www.pfir.org Co-Founder, IOIC - International Open Internet Coalition - http://www.ioic.net Founder, CIFIP - California Initiative For Internet Privacy - http://www.cifip.org Founder, PRIVACY Forum - http://www.vortex.com Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com DayThink: http://daythink.vortex.com ------------------------------------------- Archives: http://v2.listbox.com/member/archive/247/@now Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
