Dave, et al,

exit polls in the republican primaries 'last century' showed that 43% (I
wish I could recall the source of that stat, but it has been 7 years....) of the republicans voting in the primary thought they were voting for 'George Bush Sr.' as in 'his dad' so an enlightened electorate is not what anyone should expect. They're not all "interesting people" (sorry to co-opt the name, but it makes the point clear) :-)

The electoral college (now perverted into a shameless bunch of
sycophants) is there to both interpret and correct mistakes like that
which took place in 2000. In centuries past, they've done the job needed
and put someone else into office, not based upon partisan rules, but
based upon [hopefully] educated judgment.

Actually, on that subject, rather than a single day, an 'election week'
would eliminate much of the media frenzy that can dishearten an
individual's sense of value of their own intention to vote. (even the indelible inked finger would motivate people to vote, and marginally reduce fraud)

And stop using voter rolls to pull in jurors, it keeps a number of good
people from registering. Or have any number of private data mining
companies simply generate 'a list of everyone' and send them a card with
a fill in the blank, return postage guaranteed ballot.

cheers,
andy
p.s. a 'fiscally responsible party registrant wannabe'

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/02/15/ BAGUCO5CPL10.DTL Ralph Nader, whom many of us hold responsible for bringing us Bush et al, is threatening to repeat his maniacal blunder. Knowing when to compromise in order to inch closer to your goals is the essence of wisdom. Intransigence such as Nader's is sheer egotism. The country has paid an enormous price because too many liberals were equally intransigent and saw Nader as their hero. If you're one of those, shame on you - and if he runs, don't make the same mistake again. Many Democrats deserve to be chastised, and I'm all for his leaning on them and shoving them toward more progressive policies. But in running as a presidential candidate all he can possibly do is help the Republicans by bleeding off Democratic votes.
