Hmm ... just a couple months ago, several major newspapers, including the NYT, the San Jose Mercury News, and the LA Times, laid off hundreds of reporters. This was only the most recent of many waves of newsroom layoffs over the past few years. Many papers are finding that it's not so easy to support a large newsroom staff when newspaper readership and ad revenues are declining. Many find they can rely on AP for basic coverage of world and national news, and readers don't complain. But sure enough, the quality (and comprehensiveness) of their coverage suffers.
