I am getting confused. There seems to be at least one person who did  
not know about the experiment being performed on that person by , I  
assume, permission of the site.

So what is the experiment, what data is being gathered etc.

Dave,

This seems to be twisted around - the experiment is being conducted by
the sites participating in Coral. There's little difference between that
and a site that pays Akamai for caching - either way, there appears to
be spurious traffic to unexpected places, and in both cases the site is
the one making the decision (as it could, e.g., to redirect). That's the
right of the site owner, regardless.
