We need help in Utah before this spreads. A bill was amended at the last minute and then swept to the governor for signature. The goal was simply to keep the BlackBerry phone numbers of legislators out of the hands of the media, lobbyists and the public at large. But the solution potentially clamped down on all of the ways Utahns can contact their government. The story of HB258 is an example of how Utah officials are grappling with government openness in a digital age - and in this case limiting access. As Joel Campbell of the Utah Media Coalition puts it, HB258 "is like killing a mosquito with an atomic bomb."
