While I applaud SIPhone, I think in the main they're just being sensible.IM got away with walled gardens (as if that's an advantage) because it moreor less started that way. People have been phoning the world for manydecades. The public will never gravitate toward a phone system where theyneed different software to call different people (which, of course, issubject to change as people change providers). The phone network may never be "open" in the largest sense--it hasn't been to date--but that doesn'tmean from the customers point of view it will be closed, either.Besides, eBay didn't buy Skype in order to corner the telecom voice market.Whitman is much smarter than that.
