At what point is simply saying "Well, we have to go along or we can't make a buck!" no longer an acceptable excuse? History suggests that apart from the purely ethical concerns, firms that engage in this sort of rationalization may face significant exposure and liabilities down the line.
I think history might suggest the opposite. An awful lot of leading German firms made poison gas and such during WWII, but they're still around today. IBM sold computers to the old South African government to administer apartheid.
