*Front* cover? Does that mean that if I hold the passport the wrong way, the skimmer will have a free ride? Also, the GPO regulations (below) say the antiskimming material won't protect at all inside 10 cm, which suggests that high-power skimmers will have an easier time of it penetrating the antiskimming material outside 10 cm. Time to get passport holders with several layers of real aluminum foil all the way around them. Herb To address Americans' concerns about ID theft, the Bush administration said the new passports will be outfitted with "antiskimming material" in the front cover to "mitigate" the threat of the information being surreptitiously scanned from afar. (From the article mentioned) From the GPO regulations p "Based on that testing, the Department, in cooperation with the GPO, will include an anti-skimming material in the front cover and spine of the electronic passport that will mitigate the threat of skimming from distances beyond the ten centimeters prescribed by the ISO 14443 technology, as long as the passport book is closed or nearly closed." -----Original Message----- From: David Farber [mailto:dave () farber net] Sent: Tuesday, October 25, 2005 4:47 PM To: Ip Ip Subject: [IP] U.S. passports to receive RFID implants starting in October 2006 [priv] Begin forwarded message: From: Declan McCullagh <declan () well com> Date: October 25, 2005 4:23:23 PM EDT To: politech () politechbot com Subject: [Politech] U.S. passports to receive RFID implants starting in October 2006 [priv] Text of regulations: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2005/05-21284.htm --- http://news.com.com/Passports+to+get+RFID+chip+implants/ 2100-7348_3-5913644.html?tag=nefd.top Passports to get RFID chip implants October 25, 2005, 12:12 PM PDT All U.S. passports will be implanted with remotely-readable computer chips starting in October 2006, the Bush administration has announced. Sweeping new State Department regulations issued Tuesday say that passports issued after that time will have tiny radio frequency ID (RFID) chips that can transmit personal information including the name, nationality, sex, date of birth, place of birth and digitized photograph of the passport holder. Eventually, the government contemplates adding additional digitized data such as "fingerprints or iris scans." Over the last year, opposition to the idea of implanting RFID chips in passports has grown amidst worries that identity thieves could snatch personal information out of the air simply by aiming a high- powered antenna at a person or a vehicle carrying a passport. Out of the 2,335 comments on the plan that were received by the State Department this year, 98.5 percent were negative. The objections mostly focused on security and privacy concerns.
