The two sentenced scammers cheated a brazilian banker for the best part
of a decade (most of the 80s). They were arrested a few years back but
the first trial collapsed due to procedural issues. The retrial has been
going on for quite some time (and I believe the scammers put their loot
to good use by hiring some very high powered lawyers to represent them)

One thing I admire about the EFCC, having met them and interacted with
them as a speaker in a conference on economic crime they organized in
Abuja some months back, is their bulldog tenacity in going after these
people.

They have an old legal system that more or less dates back to the days
when they were a british colony, they've suffered through several years
of brutal military dictatorship before the last few years of a
democratically elected government .. and corruption is, as the article
says, deeply entrenched there.
