Dave:This is silly. Apple is in trouble over the longterm -- as is Intel. The classic PC isn't the at the center of the new technology infrastructure and these are still basically PC vendors.
Servers and portable devices are far more important in the future and Intel has little sway in this new world. Intel's bet on the Itanium failed and they are 2+ years behind AMD in x86 engineering. Apple failed to understand how important notebooks would become and doesn't have the money to finance mobile processors.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has figured all this out and is way ahead of both Apple and Intel in taking advantage of the fundamental technology shifts now underway.
Mr. Cringely is a "PC journalist" who is in serious need of an update . . .
