There is also the issue of other media coming of age. For example, it could be argued that what makes Star Wars special is not the story but the 'world' and environment of Star Wars.

This is more relevant now than it was in the late 1970s when Star Wars premiered.

The newest 'computer mediated environmental interactive systems' ie. 'computer games' of the Star Wars world have graduated to allow a much wider audience to enjoy them than the earlier games.

In fact, the new games are so good and the movies so, uhm, awful, I'd be happy to call the movies high-resolution advertising for the 'real thing' - the interactive games.

There will only be more of this.

Why watch the almost random selection of clues in CSI and when you could be solving the mystery and interacting with the rest of the characters yourself...
