ID card critics have called for the scheme to be
scrapped after a Home Office minister admitted the
benefits had been "over emphasised".

Tony McNulty, the minister responsible for the
project, said ID cards would not solve the problems of
terrorism or fraud. He told a private seminar that the
Government, in its "enthusiasm," had exaggerated the
benefits to the state rather than for individuals.


ID card benefits have been 'over emphasised'
Speaking to a left-wing think-tank in Whitehall, he
conceded that ID cards could help where fraud was
"part of the equation" but would not fully eradicate
such incidents.

David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said the
minister had "let the cat out of the bag.

"This scheme will cost the taxpayer billions of
pounds, be fraught with practical difficulties and
have a serious impact on our civil liberties.
